A suspect has been taken into custody following a reported shooting at Florida State University on Thursday, according to two law enforcement sources familiar with the situation.
At least four individuals have been injured, according to WCTV, a CNN affiliate, which cited information from local hospital officials. A first responder at the scene confirmed similar details to CNN.
Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare released a statement noting that it is actively treating victims from the incident. “As the situation continues to develop, we are still gathering information and do not have specifics to release at this time,” the statement said.
Law enforcement officials say the severity of the injuries remains unknown, as reports are still in the early stages.
Florida State University issued a warning on X, formerly known as Twitter, alerting the campus community to an “active shooter” situation near the Student Union. “Officers are either on scene or en route. Please continue to shelter in place, avoid windows and doors, and be ready to take additional safety precautions,” the message advised.
CNN has reached out to local law enforcement, including the Tallahassee Police Department, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, and FSU for more information.
Emily Palmer, a 21-year-old student at FSU, said she was close to the Student Union when she received an emergency alert about the unfolding threat.
“Shelter in place,” read one of the alerts sent through the FSU Alert system. “An active shooter was reported at the Student Union. Police are responding. Stay alert for more updates.”
Palmer, speaking to CNN from the safety of her campus housing, said, “I’m shaking. It’s just really overwhelming.” She added that she was worried about friends currently in class, who she said were being escorted out by police with their hands raised.
Richard Rind, FSU’s director of transportation and parking, told CNN he was also taking shelter as the scene unfolded. “There are many emergency vehicles outside, but we’re locked down in a building across the street and can’t see much,” he said. Rind reported hearing gunshots and seeing people fleeing the area during the chaos Thursday afternoon.
